This is the head of one of the Waterton Lakes. Here, where the majestic Rocky Mountains rise suddenly out of the rolling prairies, is found amid the peaks, the lakes of Waterton Lakes National Park carved out of the rock by ancient glaciers. Alberta's Waterton Lakes National Park borders Glacier National Park in Montana to the south, and together they make up the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the first of its kind in the world.

The Peruvian altiplano is a high plateau ranging in altitude from 3500 to over 4000 meters above sea level. Though the altiplano is a cold, harsh environment, large herds of hardy llamas such as these hint at the richness of South America's high grasslands. The Quelccaya ice cap rises in the background, 55 square kilometers of ice that provides important clues on climatic change and variability in the South American tropics. The ice sheet's summit elevation is 5670 meters and its maximum summit thickness is 164 meters.

This area in Tehachapi, California is one of the world's leading wind energy producers. Prevailing northwesterly winds blow through passes in the Tehachapi Mountains that connect the San Joaquin Valley with the Mojave Desert. The best winds occur from March to September, averaging 15-20 miles per hour. As the size of the generators has increased, cost per kilowatt hour generated has decreased. Current costs are around 3.5 to 4 cents per kilowatt hour, less expensive than coal, oil, nuclear and most natural gas-fired generation. Tehachapi's roughly 5,000 wind plants offset the emission of more than seven million pounds of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulates that otherwise would be produced by relatively clean burning natural gas. They also offset 1.1 billion pounds of greenhouse gases each year.
